Supporting Child Survivors: Educational and Welfare Intervention at NAPTIP Shelter

Since October 2025, Little Light Women and Children Initiative (LLWCI) has been providing critical educational support to child survivors of trafficking at the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Shelter in Uyo. This ongoing intervention addresses a crucial gap in the recovery and reintegration process for children who have experienced the trauma of trafficking.

Programme Activities
LLWCI provides personalized, one-on-one tutoring in fundamental literacy and numeracy skills. This individualized approach recognizes that each child arrives with different educational backgrounds, learning needs, and trauma responses. The private tutoring format creates a safe, non-judgmental space where children can learn at their own pace and rebuild their confidence.

Currently, three survivors are receiving regular educational support from a dedicated tutor engaged by Little Light Women and Children Initiative.

Impact and Outcomes
While the programme continues to evolve, early observations reveal meaningful impact on the young survivors:

Educational Progress
Children are developing essential literacy and numeracy skills that had deteriorated during their trafficking ordeal or were never properly developed. This foundation is critical for their eventual return to formal schooling.

Psychological Benefits
Tutoring sessions provide structure and normalcy in an otherwise disorienting time. The children show increased engagement, purpose, and hope when participating in learning activities—vital signs of psychological recovery.

Improved Reintegration Readiness
Children maintaining educational continuity during shelter stays are better equipped to rejoin their communities and return to school without falling further behind their peers, reducing stigma and easing their transition.

Prevention of Further Educational Exclusion
By addressing learning needs immediately, the programme helps prevent these survivors from joining Nigeria’s growing population of permanently out-of-school children—a risk factor for re-trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

Little Light Women and Children Initiative believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. For child survivors of trafficking, education represents hope, healing, and the promise of a different future.

We will continue standing with these resilient young survivors, ensuring that their time in the shelter is not just a waiting period but a time of positive growth and renewed possibility. Because
Education is not merely a privilege, it is a basic right that should be accessible to every child, regardless of their circumstances.
